Ingredients:
- 4 large Honeycrisp or Granny Smith apples
- 120 ml warm water or apple cider
- 15 g unsalted butter, cut into small dots
- 45 g old-fashioned rolled oats
- 55 g light brown sugar, firmly packed
- 2 g ground cinnamon
- 1 g ground nutmeg
- 28 g unsalted butter, softened
- 1 pinch sea salt
- 25 g chopped pecans or walnuts
Instructions:
- Start by removing the core of the apple using a melon baller to scoop out the stem and seeds. Stop about half an inch from the bottom to create a 'cup' to hold the filling.
- In a small mixing bowl, combine the oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and softened butter. Use your fingers to rub the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture reaches a texture similar to wet sand.
- Pack the spiced crumble filling tightly into each apple cavity, letting it mound slightly over the top. Add chopped pecans or walnuts if using.
- Place the apples in a 9x9 inch baking dish and pour the water or apple cider into the bottom of the dish. Dot the tops of the apples with the remaining 15g of butter.
- Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 40 minutes until the skins are slightly wrinkled, the filling is bubbling, and a knife slides into the apple flesh with no resistance.
